CAIRO
The Egyptian capital, Cairo, is located on the banks and islands of the Nile River in the north of Egypt. With a total population of over 16 million people, Cairo is one of the largest cities in the world, that straddles Africa and the Middle East region. Although Cairo is famous for its history, it is now home to a vibrant city.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION

The Holiday Inn Cairo Citystars Hotel is in the same compound as the Intercontinental Citystars Cairo Hotel.
Preferential rates have been negotiated at the Holiday Inn Cairo Citystars Hotel of $90.00 subject to 25.44% service charge and taxes. Participants will settle their own bills on check-out.
TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT
The preferential rate negotiated with the hotel includes travel to and from the airport. Flight number and exact time of arrival have to be communicated to facilitate this and should be included on the registration form and returned to Winnie de Guzman deguzmanw@who.int, fax:+ 41 22 791 4886 by 11 April 2008.
VISA
All foreign visitors must be in possession of a passport that is valid for at least 6 months past the date of entry into the country.
Participants should obtain visas to enter Egypt before traveling. Please contact the Egyptian Embassy in your respective country to arrange for a valid visa prior to leaving to Cairo. In case you need any specific supporting documentation from the Stop TB Partnership for your visa application, please contact Winnie de Guzman.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travelers coming from infected areas.
HOW TO REACH CAIRO
Cairo International Airport (IATA, CAI) is served by Egypt Air, the national carrier, and other major airlines. Please note that Egypt Air arrives and departs from the domestic terminal, even for international flights.
FLIGHT CONFIRMATION
Please ensure that the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat is aware of your arrival and departure details. Please insert flight date and time on your registration form. Also notify any changes to Winnie de Guzman deguzmanw@who.int as soon as they are known. Upon arrival in Cairo, please hand over your airline ticket to the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat for re-confirmation of your return flight.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The subway system, called 'The Metro' locally, is a fast and efficient way of getting around Cairo. It can get very crowded during rush hour. The first two train cars are reserved for women only. There is a flat fare of EGP 1.00 per trip.
SAFETY
Egypt is generally peaceful. People are friendly and cooperative. The security situation in the country is now stable. Please be reminded that personal security is an individual responsibility. Using common sense and precautionary actions can reduce risk. Visitors to Egypt are advised to dress and behave discreetly, particularly if traveling to Upper Egypt. Travel to the towns of Minia, Sohag, Assiut and Qena is not recommended. Your safety is our primary concern, therefore please try to conform to these guidelines:
- Keep a low profile in crowded public areas;
- Take care when handing over business cards;
- Check with people before photographing them, as it is sometimes disliked.
It is advisable to drink bottled water.
The emergency police phone number is 122.
FINANCIAL MATTERS
The monetary unit in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP) subdivided into 100 Piastres. Notes are available in EGP: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. The rate of exchange is US$1=5.47 EGP (as of 06 March 2008).
ATM's are located in various places throughout downtown Cairo. An ATM machine is available in the Intercontinental Citystars Cairo Hotel.
COMMUNICATION
The telephone country code for Egypt is +20. Local mobile phone operators have roaming agreements with major operators.
CLIMATE
In May, the temperature is expected to range between a high of 33oC and a low of 17oC. It is recommended that you wear business attire inside the hotel and during meetings. Cultural dress is welcome.

MEETING ORGANIZATION
To assist you during your stay in Cairo, a secretariat will be established in the Intercontinental Citystars Cairo Hotel.
You will receive a background dossier upon arrival.Documents will be posted on the Stop TB Partnership web site approximately 10 to 14 days before the Coordinating Board Meeting.
