A symposium projected into the future

On 21-22 September 2012 it took place at the Civic Aquarium of Milan in Italy the Third National Conference on Tuberculosis, organized by Stop TB Italia and the Permanent Training Centre on Tuberculosis.

The title of the Symposium "Tuberculosis: a social disease," wanted to emphasize the social aspects of the disease, setting them in a wider context of health and wellness.

As occurred on the occasion of the World TB Day 2012, the symposium was opened by Pierfrancesco Majorino, Town councillor for Social Affairs and Culture of Health of the Municipality of Milan, who reiterated the commitment of the Municipality towards the most marginalized and vulnerable people into our society. The opening was followed by the intervention of Mario Raviglione, Director of the Stop TB Department at the WHO, who outlined the current situation of the global fight against tuberculosis. Regional meeting (Eastern regions) of the Partnership for TB Care and Control in India held

The Eastern region partners of the Partnership for TB Care and Control in India met on 20 -21 September at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The consultative meeting for the Eastern region was organised for the states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Participants discussed the challenges faced by each state in implementing the TB programme in the field, possible solutions, and actions from the civil society with the involvement of communities to implement these solutions. Dr. B. Pattnaik, Joint Director and State TB Officer, Odisha states “Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) has reached a stage where it cannot achieve its goal of universal access without the support of civil society and other sectors”. Thirty four participants, representing civil society partners, and the state TB programme, deliberated on the key challenges faced in their respective states and the involvement civil society and communities in moving forward. The report has been shared with all stakeholders for their follow up on the suggestions generated from the meeting.

Regional Consultative Meeting of Partnership for TB Care and Control in India

The Partnership for TB Care and Control in India met on 18 - 19 June 2012 at Guwahati. The consultative meeting for the North Eastern region was organised for the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Participants discussed the challenges faced by each state in implementing the TB programme in the field, possible solutions, and actions from the civil society to implement these solutions. Dr. D. Hojai Director of Health Services, Assam states “I am happy to know that the members of the partnership in the North East are playing a pivotal role in the curative and preventive aspects of TB and getting rid of TB from our region”. Twenty two participants, representing civil society partners, the private sector as well as the state TB programme, deliberated on the key challenges faced in their respective states and the involvement of private healthcare providers moving forward. The report has been shared with all stakeholders for their follow up on the suggestions generated from the meeting.

WHO patron, the First Lady of Iraq, Mrs. Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, launches Iraq National Stop TB Partnership

On 27 June 2012, H.E. Mrs. Hero Ibrahim Ahmed officially launched the establishment of the Iraq Stop TB Partnership that is based on the notion of close collaboration of a plurality of partners who together work on implementing innovative, unconventional ways to fight TB at the national level. The UK Coalition to Stop TB launches a new school-based campaign

On World TB Day 2012, the UK Coalition to Stop TB launched a new schools-based campaign to help raise awareness among young people in the UK. The aim of the campaign is to involve the youth population, informing that TB is a global problem that could come to an end in our lifetime. Read more.

The Iranian Stop TB Committee held its 34th meeting

The Iranian Stop TB Committee had its 34th meeting on 6 May 2012. The meeting covered important issues, such as the provision of food basket to TB patients, training workshops of prison organizations and the public-private mix. Read the report.

National Consultative Meeting of the Partnership for TB Care and Control

The Partnership for TB Care and Control held its National Consultative Meeting of Partners on 4 and 5 April 2012. The consultation enabled partners to discuss a roadmap for the future of the partnership addressing issues related to its role in supporting national efforts and developing a 5 year strategy, as well as the possibility to register as a legal independent entity. Partners were able to interact and participate in many discussions, showing their opinions and reaching consensus on different points of the agenda. Read more.


UK Coalition to Stop TB responds to an inquiry on Global Fund and UK investment

The International Development Select Committee conducted an inquiry into the Global Fund and UK investment. The UK Coalition prepared a written submission on the impact of the Global Fund for global TB control and its importance and impact for TB. Based on this written submission, the UK Coalition provided oral evidence at the hearing on 17 April 2012. Read more.

The Egyptian Stop TB Partnership celebrates No Tobacco Day

Eastern Mediterranean Stop TB Partnership at The Regional Conference of The Union

The inaugural session of the Regional Conference of The Union and Egyptian Society of Chest Disease started with a presentation on the Eastern Mediterranean Stop TB Partnership, given by its Chairman, Professor Tageldin. The conference took place in Egypt from 27 to 31 March. The event was very well attended. More than 1700 participants including large delegations from Pakistan, Sudan, Malaysia and delegates from Middle East and North Africa participated. From The Union, Dr Nills Billo and former president Dr Asma Elsony attended. In addition Ministers from Egypt and national TB programme managers from several Middle East countries were present. Technical Assistance from Stop TB Secretariat to Stop TB Nigeria

From 12 to 17 March the Nigeria Stop TB Partnership received a visit by the Global Stop TB Partnership. The main purpose of the visit was to provide technical assistance to strengthen the partnership and its influence in the country, as well as to develop a strategic and operational TB plan together with stakeholders. Stop TB Egypt provides nurse training workshop

On 28 and 29 March a training workshop for nurses about TB and MDR-TB was conducted by Stop TB Egypt in collaboration with the Egyptian TB Control Programme during the 53rd International Congress of the Egyptian Society of Chest Diseases & Tuberculoses & 27th Conference of Middle East Region International Union against Tuberculosis & Lung Diseases in Cairo. Public Hearing on TB in the Brazilian National Congress

On 27 March, the National Congress hosted a public hearing on TB as a public health problem in Brazil. The initiative came from Stop TB Brazil and a member of the Parliament, Antonio Brito from PTB-BA (Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro - Bahia), as one of the activities for World TB Day 2012. The main purpose of the meeting was to involve the National Congress into issues related to TB and strengthen relations with other sectors beyond the Ministry of Health. Read more.



Stop TB Italia engages youth in the fight against TB

On January 25, Stop TB Italia engaged local students, professors and community members by presenting informational booklets on tuberculosis and other materials about the Stop TB Partnership at an event hosted by the Shared Development Consulting Group (SDCG) and the University of Pavia. This is another achievement for Stop TB Italia strategy to actively engage youth and their communities.

New information hub for national Stop TB partnerships launched

On 25 January the Stop TB Partnership launched a new web-based platform - National Stop TB Partnerships in Action. These new pages highlight the pivotal role national partnerships play in catalyzing the skills, services and resources needed to bring TB care to all who need it, especially people in the most vulnerable groups. They consolidate the most up-to-date information about national partnerships and their plans and activities. It is hoped that they will serve as a valuable asset for partners already engaged in a national partnership - and also for those who need more information about how partners are working together in their country.

Call to action on drug resistant TB

In response to the recent reports of the severe form of drug resistant TB emerging in Mumbai, the Partnership for TB Care and Control realesed to the press a call to action. This document targets all stakeholders nationwide working for TB control to scale up their efforts in actively identifying TB patients through approved, early, accurate and high quality diagnosis and ensuring completion of treatment of all TB patients. The Vietnam Stop TB Partnership held its 6th meeting

The Vietnam Stop TB Partnership held its 6th meeting on 9 December 2011. Around 40 partners participated and reported on recent activities, while new partners were welcomed, including the Vietnam Veteran Association. Partners listened to the debriefing on the evaluation of the TB control programme 2006-2011 and on a new strategy for TB high risk and vulnerable populations. Health education material was shared by the Center for Community Development.

Stop TB Kenya begins the partnering process

The partnering process is a fundamental step in any partnership, and the Kenya Stop TB Partnership is ready to take this important step. The partnering process is a way to formalize ties with partners, identify the roles and responsibilities of partners, and map resources (financial, material and human resources!) that partners can contribute in order to reduce overlap or waste and increase efficiency and efficacy. Jeddah Stop TB Group and Stop TB Italia share experiences

A recent meeting between Jeddah Stop TB Group and Stop TB Italia allowed both partnerships to share their best practices and lessons learnt. Although regional meetings between partnerships often bring together national groups, these two partnerships remind us that international sharing of experiences can bring fresh ideas and a new perspective to a national strategy. A successful meeting between the two partnerships will build a lasting relationship between the two countries and discussion of collaborative projects in Africa is already in the works. Civil society expands service delivery through Project Axshya in Andhra Pradesh

In India, partners of the Partnership for TB Care and Control (PTCC) began Project Axshya (meaning TB-Free) which involves civil society organizations for greater expansion in hard-to-reach areas. The project will reach 750 million in 374 districts in 23 states of India by 2015. Project Axshya in Andhra Pradesh began with a signing of a MoU between TB Alert India and World Vision for collaboration on 8 July, 2011. Read more [.pdf]


Stop TB Italia raises awareness in a Symposium on TB

Stop TB Italia and the Permanent Training Center on Tuberculosis are organizing the symposium "Tuberculosis: a complicated disease" on 14-15 October in Monza, Italy. The goal of the symposium is to remind Italians that based on recent events, it is clear that TB has not been eliminated in Italy and remains a global health challenge. Read more [.pdf]. Making Strides in ACSM in Pakistan

Three separate ACSM orientation sessions were held in Pakistan to train partners in the public and private sectors. The first was an advocacy and communication training on writing stories about patients successfully completing TB treatment. The other orientation sessions were for training young volunteers on TB-related issues and educating members of the provincial assembly about TB to motivate them to implement DOTS programs in their districts.

Ramadan campaign generates donations for TB patients and their families in Afghanistan

Stop TB Partnership Afghanistan announced its Ramadan campaign to generate donations for TB patients and their families in Kabul on July 10. A month long campaign by the Board, partners and the secretariat will target business community, individual and organizational philanthropists to seek funds in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Government workers and private physicians ink manifesto against TB in The Philippines

On two separate occasions, government health workers, national government agency representatives and private physicians from 22 provinces signed the manifesto of support for the public-private mix DOTS (PPMD) initiative, in an intensified effort to combat the deadly yet curable disease, tuberculosis. Public-Private Mix DOTS initiative gives hope to Mamanwas

Tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among the Mamanwa communities in Surigao del Norte. For this, the Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) in the province has sought the involvement of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) agency to strengthen the campaign against TB, especially among vulnerable groups like the Mamanwas. Stop TB Canada symposium at The Union North American Regional meeting

Stop TB Canada held a symposium at the Union's North American Regional meeting, in Vancouver on 24 February 2011. Two hundred delegates attended presentations on global TB trends, impact of social determinants, importance of strengthened program and funding issues, by video conference from Geneva. The presenters Mario Raviglione, Knut Lonnroth, Ernesto Jaramillo and Andrea Panoja generated lively discussion. The session was followed by wonderful presentations on Canadian projects and research partnerships abroad.

Jeddah Stop TB sets up medical help call centres

Stop TB Partnership Korea announced its new beginning
