Comments:Yangon The NTP Myanmar began field operation of the anticipated National TB prevalence Survey today. Fifty thousand eligible subjects aged 15 years or more in 70 clusters will be registered, and all eligible subjects who provide consent will be screened by utilizing a structured individual interview and Chest Radiography (CXR) examinations. CXR films will be processed and read on spot soon after the examinations. Study participants who are suspected TB by symptoms and those who have any abnormal CXR findings will be asked to submit two sputum specimens, on spot and next morning, for smear and culture examinations. Prevalent TB cases will be diagnosed based on results of bacteriological examinations, including culture and identification. The filed operation is expected to complete by the end of 2009.

Despite the efforts of the government and partners, Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be one of the major health problems in Myanmar with a population of 56 million, one of twenty-two TB high-burden countries.
The NTP planned a national TB prevalence survey in 2006-2007. However, due to financial and time constraints associated with the termination of the GFATM project, the NTP was only able to complete a survey in capital division, Yangon, in 2006. The survey results presented a high prevalence of smear and bacteriologically positive TB in both urban and rural areas. Prevalence of smear positive TB was 279/100,000 for eligible subjects ten years old or older, and 229/100,000 in the population.. In 2007, the NTP detected 43,000 new smear positive TB cases (87/100,000), 116% of WHO's estimation of the TB incidence, 75/100,000, in Myanmar. These strongly suggest that the current TB burden in Myanmar is underestimated.
As TB prevalence is one of indicators of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Global Stop TB Plan, the TB prevalence survey is an excellent tool to measure the impact of the program. The NTP is going conduct the National Prevalence Survey in 2009 in collaboration with national and international partners. The proposed budget to carry out the nation wide survey with 50,000 eligible subjects in 70 clusters is US$891,810.
The results from the national prevalence survey will help to support appropriate national and international investments in TB control.
