Comments:WHO/EMRO staff (Dr Bassili) visited Afghanistan from 26 June to 4 July 2009 to assess TB care in particular its M/E component supported by R4 and R8 grants (R4 started from 10 Sept 05, phase 2 from 1 Sept 07 and finished in April 09, and also R8 that started from 1 April 09). Her visit was a part of the joint partners' review mission on TB care in Afghanistan, jointly conducted by MOPH, BRAC, GFATM / FIND, JICA, TBCAP / USAID / MSH, WHO and others. Dr Bassili comprehensively reviewed the M/E component in TB care at all levels based on the progress made with R4 support. While appreciating the presence of the WHO recommended recording & reporting forms in NTP and in BPHS / EPHS partners, Dr Bassili made thorough recommendations to upgrade M/E by strengthening monitoring mechanisms (quarterly meetings and supervision) and updating recording & reporting system (WHO recommended revised recording & reporting). The idea was incorporated in the R8 grant (started from 1 April 2009) for further improvement of M/E component of TB care in particular and TB care in general.
