Comments:WHO/EMRO sent a consultant (Dr Auer) to Pakistan from 18 August to 4 September 2008 to review PPM activities supported by GF R3 & R6 (R3 started from 01 Jan 05, phase 2 from 01 Jan 07: R6 started from 01 Dec 07). PPM is a core component in both rounds, and more importantly, the critical component for TB care as 80% of general health services are reportedly delivered by private sector. Dr Auer visited key urban cities (Lahore, Karachi, etc) and assessed the R3/R6 supported PPM activities. He found around 20% of TB patients notified in Pakistan are from private sector. His analysis strongly supported the national TB programme and partners relevant to promote PPM. His report was published by the National TB Programme and was referred to in the WHO Global TB Report 2009 (Box 2.7 "Forging public-private partnership (PPP) for TB care and control in Pakistan" page 57). The R3 grant is about to be completed successfully by September 2009 (no RCC was made as it was a four-year grant).
