| Comments: | Dr Agnes Hamzaoui assisted Solomon Islands from Sep. 5 to 9, 2011 to validate and finalize national guidelines and learning material for the implementation of the Practical Approach to Lung Health (PAL). Dr Hamzaoui provided technical leadership to the National Working Group on PAL that gathered in Honiara (Sep 6-8, 2011) to complete the draft PAL guidelines produced in April 2011, still with the support of Dr Hamzaoui. The production of guidelines and learning material by a National Working Group is a crucial step for the implementation of PAL in that it provides the tools and skills to actually roll-out the new strategy. Based on the international standards and recommendations on PAL, it is strongly advisable that national guidelines are developed locally in order to reflect real needs, burden of diseases and capacity available in country. The standard learning material is an essential tool for training health workers and should, in turn, be shaped around the national guidelines. The development of the above tools and their endorsement by the Ministry of Health will allow a group of trainers identified within the NWG to train the necessary number of health workers on PAL, as encompassed by the performance framework for Phase 1.
