| Comments: | Course participants have received ongoing support and monitoring by the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi. Activities are reported back to ICN within one year of the course taking place. Nurses present at this training identified the following as challenges to effective delivery of TB prevention and control programs in their jurisdiction: Lack of recognition of nurses (particularly those working in TB), staff shortages, fear of illness, staffing with nurses who lack knowledge and experience in TB, poor staff attitudes and low morale, lack of definition of nursing role in TB, challenges with health care team coordination, poor infection control practices and policies, inadequate program and facilities for treatment of MDR TB, drug shortages or stock outs, insufficient access to personal protective equipment, delays in obtaining lab results, geographic barriers for patients, stigma, and issues around patient poverty and need for financial resources leading to some patients selling their medication. The course evaluation was very positive and each participant prepared a training plan to meet and address specific needs, barriers and epidemiological issues relevant to their practice and place of work.
