| Title: | Prevalence survey |
| Type: | Mission |
| Terms of Reference: | Assist the TB Unit with conducting the training of the surveyors and team leaders for the national TB prevalence survey 2. Review status of the recommendations made during previous missions 3. Review status of preparations for the pilot study planned to start 12 September 2011Activities and results of KNCV interventions (training, development of plans, proposal, evaluation, etc.) in relation to the terms of reference During the mission the consultant assisted in facilitating the training for the surveyors and team leaders for the national TB prevalence survey. The training was successfully conducted, the recruited group of surveyors was experienced and will make a good team. Additional surveyors’ were trained to avoid shortages later on during the survey. Observations on the training were: a) The training was well organized and time well kept b) There was active participation, many questions asked by the participants; good questions were asked indicating people understand the complexity of the task ahead c) Facilitators had a nice interactive way of teaching, asking many questions to participants (who actively participated). Use of nice energizers and exercises. d) The national importance and weight of the survey was well expressed. The responsibility the survey staff has in taking part in this nationally important survey was made very clear. 1 For KNCV consultants to be used for non TB-CARE I missions The status of preparations for the pilot study planned to start September 12th was reviewed. Mainly due to delay in arriving of the trucks for the X-ray equipment (which are stuck in Dar es Salaam Port) the planning was updated. The pilot is now planned to start on 24th September although depending on the delivery of the truck and lab equipment this might have to be postponed further to mid October Issues to address before the pilot can be conducted: a) Finalize recruitment X-ray readers (medical doctors): they still need to be trained in correct reading normal-abnormal (this is one of selection criteria), training needed of 3-4 days. b) Training of X-ray field technician as operators (field operations – 3 days) and MOH technicians (long term maintenance – 4 days) by Oldelft who supplied the X-ray machines c) X-ray machines have been formally handed over on September 2nd but installation of archive at CHUK needs to be done when the trucks arrive (4 days; need for technician Oldelft to fly in). d) Delivery of trucks and registration process (after clearance from port 2-3 days from Dar es salaam to Kigali then 5-10 days for vehicle registration process) e) Procurement IT and lab equipment, not yet arrived, expected mid October. Interim solutions have been investigated for the pilot, i.e. use of computers from SPH for data entry pilot and use of LED microscopes from health centers. Discussions on this will he held with Global fund to sort out the issues with procurement delay. f) Training lab technicians (planned to start in week September 5th). g) Data entry clerks are available from pool SPH, they can easily be called but need to be trained (2-3 days) h) Not all materials for the pilot area already available (T-shirts/vest for surveyors, bags for surveyors, banner for central site, tent/canopies for central site, cooler boxed sputum cups, tables/chairs central site, vehicles, folders/boxes to store files in field & central level, printing of final forms, registers, ID cards (signed/stamped) and SOPs etc). i) Practice of census and interview in dummy households for surveyors before pilot start.
