Comments:WHO/EMRO staff (Dr Seita) visited Afghanistan from 26 June to 4 July 2009 to assess TB care supported by R4 (started from 10 Sept 05, phase 2 from 1 Sept 07 and finished in April 09) and assist finalization / implementation of the R8 workplan (R8 started from 1 April 09 but grant was signed on 12 May 09). His visit was a part of the joint partners' review mission on TB care in Afghanistan, jointly conducted by MOPH, BRAC, GFATM / FIND, JICA, TBCAP / USAID / MSH, WHO and others. R8 grant has five Objectives (Quality of DOTS, TB/HIV & MDR, PPM, ACSM, OR) with the total fund of USD 32M (5 years) and USD 10M (phase 1). Discussion was focused on how to expand TB care through BPHS / EPHS network particularly in hard-to-access areas which still account for a quarter of populations in Afghanistan. Strengthening of M/E was also discussed (ref. visit of Dr Amal Bassili on M/E, supported by TBTEAM). R8 will address such issues through its workplan so as to ensure good access to TB care in Afghanistan. Although R8 was officially started from 1 April and the grant was signed on12 May, as of now (14 July 09), Afghanistan has yet to receive funds from GF.
