Comments:The team was composed of Khye Seng Goh (WHO Laboratory Consultant) and Dr. Ma. Imelda D. Quelapio (WHO PMDT consultant). Places visited were the National TB Center (NTC), the NRL, the Global Fund PR, the Setthathirath Hospital, Merieux Laboratory, the central warehouse, Savannakhet Province and Asaphanthong District.

Major findings: Laos has a very young PMDT program which started last year and is currently on an expansion phase. Political commitment is evident in the NTP’s eagerness for technical assistance (TA) to implement PMDT according to standards. TA is urgently needed in aligning country guidelines to WHO policies, laboratory management, and forecasting SLDs. Capacity building is needed to put in place systems for programme management at the central level, particularly dedicating human resource for PMDT, and defining and observing roles and responsibilities, particularly in NRL
