| Title: | plan for a study of TB diagnostics in young children. |
| Type: | Mission |
| Terms of Reference: | The purpose of this trip was to plan for a study of TB diagnostics in young children. In high burden settings TB is an important cause of disease and death among children and a preventable cause of under-5 mortality. However, TB in children is difficult to diagnose. Young children are not able to expectorate sputum, are more likely to have disseminated or extrapulmonary disease, and have paucibacillary disease, all of which make it more difficult to confirm diagnosis using smear microscopy or culture. These challenges are even greater in the diagnosis of TB among children with HIV. Mycobacterial culture, the gold-standard for laboratory confirmation of TB disease, has low yield in children. |
