Title:Monitoring mission for Sudan disease prevalence survey

Terms of Reference:General objective
Monitor and evaluate the field work activities of the national prevalence survey and provide recommendations to rectify the identified challenges.

Specific objectives:
•Monitor and evaluate the field data collection for:
a.Census taking
b.Identification of the survey subjects by means of ID cards
c.Informed consent taking
d.Individual symptom screening
e.Tuberculosis suspects in depth questionnaire
f.Chest X-ray taking, reading and reporting
g.TB suspects register
•Monitor and evaluate the laboratory activities in terms of: sputum collection, transport and examination, in the field and in the national reference laboratory, and the external quality assurance system
•Evaluate the quality assurance mechanisms for the laboratory, chest X-rays and data
•Monitor the coordination and flow of data between the data collection forms, chest X-rays and sputum samples
•Monitor and evaluate data entry processes

Comments:Sudan is implementing a national TB prevalence survey with funding from the GFATM. WHO provides technical support for the prevalence survey in line with the Global task force on impact measurement hosted and coordinated by WHO. The monitoring mission took place during 18-28 February. The aim of the mission was to monitor and evaluate the field work activities of the national prevalence survey and provide recommendations to rectify the identified challenges. The international experts were: Dr Amal Bassili (WHO/EMRO), Dr SabiraTahseen (Laboratory coordinator of Pakistan disease prevalence survey) and Dr Fasil Kassa (Ethiopia disease prevalence survey coordinator). The mission visited the following places: project management unit in the Public Health Institute (PHI) with its central data management unit, central Chest X-Ray unit in a private center, and the national reference laboratory (NRL). The mission visited all active clusters in Sudan: 2 in Khartoum state, one urban and one rural and an urban cluster in Kassala state. The mission report is attached herewith.
