Title:To provide technical assistance to Malawi NTP in conducting National TB Prevalence Survey. To finalize data collection instrumen
Type:Mission
Terms of Reference:The National TB Prevalence Survey is a study project of the National Tuberculosis Programme of the Federal Ministry of Health that is aimed at measuring the actual point magnitude of the Tuberculosis case burden in Malawi in 2013.
Tuberculosis is one of the major public health problems in Malawi. The National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) within the Ministry of Health is responsible for implementing tuberculosis programs and it uses the DOTS strategy to control tuberculosis in line with the Global Plan to Stop TB (2011-2015). The NTP started implementing the DOTS program in 1984 and currently DOTS coverage is at 100%. The number of case notifications increased significantly over the period between 1985 and 2004: in 1985 the number of case notifications was at 5,000 and then it increased sharply to 20,000 in 1990 and before reaching 27,000 five years later. There is under-reporting of TB new cases in Malawi and the 2009 Global Tuberculosis Report by WHO reported that there were 48,144 new cases of tuberculosis in the country (WHO, 2009a) but the NTP only reports about half of these cases. With such new TB cases, Malawi has been rated one of the priority countries that require special attention in the control of TB in Africa.
