| Title: | a. Conduct an evaluation of the United kingdom tuberculosis surveillance system |
| Type: | Conference (invitation only - avec invitation) |
| Terms of Reference: | Following a century of decline in tuberculosis in the United States and Western Europe, tuberculosis reemerged in the US as a public health problem, widely attributed to the HIV pandemic. This increase was successfully controlled in the 1990s and the decline continues. In contrast, the United Kingdom has seen a continually increasing trend over the last two decades. Reasons for this divergence in trends between the US and the UK are not entirely clear, although differences in immigration patterns and surveillance systems may be contributory. We propose to examine reasons for the recent divergent trends in rates of TB between the US and the UK from 2000 through 2011 including analyses of trends among foreign and domestic born cases in each country and a comparison of TB prevention policies. This visit provided a contextual understanding of TB surveillance and an opportunity to evaluate performance attributes of the UK TB surveillance system. This visit also provided the US CDC team with an opportunity to meet with different UK TB surveillance teams, including the field, epidemiology and laboratory units. A greater understanding of their activities was thus developed. Finally the trip completed the process of obtaining and commencing a joint analysis of the US and UK TB surveillance data.
