| Title: | pediatric TB activities |
| Type: | Mission |
| Terms of Reference: | From the 2010 National TB/Leprosy Program report, approximately 15% of the notified TB cases in Uganda are among children 0-14 years. Of these, 3% were sputum smear positive. According to WHO estimates, there were 669 pediatric TB cases in 2010 representing about 1.5% of all reported cases. Comparing this figure to the count of nationally notified TB cases indicates that all pediatric TB cases are not being reported. In addition to limited reporting and surveillance, activities addressing pediatric TB in Uganda are generally limited. Furthermore there are programmatic, diagnostic and treatment challenges associated with pediatric TB. Some of these challenges include the absence of a specific diagnostic algorithm for TB diagnosis in children, limited access to chest radiography, no systematic contact tracing, lack of pediatric anti-TB drug formulations and limited provision of preventive therapy for child contacts of persons with infectious TB. Although there are a number of stakeholders providing and/or supporting pediatric TB care, there is limited collaboration amongst them. We traveled to Uganda with the goal of meeting with key stakeholders in the area of pediatric TB to 1) identify needs/gaps in pediatric TB, 2) identify priority areas for technical assistance, 3) discuss potential collaboration amongst stakeholders, and 4) identify pediatric TB activities requiring support. |
