World TB Day 2003 Highlights Report Reporting on activities from 50 countries around the world. (WHO/HTM/STB/2003.26) |
Over the next 40 days leading up to Forum, the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat will issue a regular series of information bulletins to keep our partners and constituents abreast of latest developments. This special bulletin is the first of the series.
The theme of this year's Forum will be "Keeping the Pledge."Despite impressive progress that has been made in global TB control efforts since the first Partners' Forum in 2001, the TB epidemic continues to worsen, driven by HIV/AIDS, deteriorating rating health care systems and a crisis in human resources for health. Now more than ever, all Stop TB partners - donor countries, foundations, technical agencies, universities, NGOs and national TB programs - have to renew the pledges made in Okinawa , Washington and Amsterdam and redouble their efforts to reach the global targets and Millenium Development Goals for TB.
India has the largest number of TB cases in the world, and it is also one of the countries making the most rapid progress in expanding DOTS. With the present rate of progress and if they continue to address the major challenges, India is going to reach the global TB targets by 2005. India is an example for many other countries struggling with TB, and we are pleased that the Government of India has agreed to host the Forum.
