Stop TB WEB ALERT

Stop TB Partners Forum postponed: March 24-26, 2004 in New Delhi, India

A letter from the Executive Secretary, Dr Marcos Espinal

Dear Colleagues,

This year's World AIDS Day will see the birth of the biggest ever initiative to fight this dreaded disease. The TB community wishes to join fully in launching the 3 X 5 initiative that promises to form a substantial part of the answer to fighting TB in AIDS endemic areas. In December, we need to pull together as a global community to strongly support the fight against AIDS. Therefore, a decision has been reached by the Partnership to postpone the Stop TB Partners Forum to World TB Day 2004. The new Stop TB Partners Forum dates will therefore be March 24, 25, 26.

The Stop TB Partnership is very fortunate to have full support for these dates at the highest levels of the Indian Government, WHO, World Bank, the Stop TB Coordinating Board, and the broad partnership network. The new dates ensure that we will have maximum participation from those who will shape the future of TB control. World TB Day 2004 will be a very powerful, high profile public health event, while worldwide the various national TB events are being organized. In addition, the new date will provide an opportunity to launch new products under preparation, especially the release of the first Progress report to the Global Plan to Stop TB. The Forum, under the theme "keeping the pledge" will build on the momentum to be created now and in December, and it will pass along that momentum to the AIDS conference and Roll Back Malaria meetings in Bangkok in July.

We recognise that this change in plans will cause inconvenience to those who had already committed to coming to Delhi in December, and for this we offer our sincere apologies. The Stop TB Secretariat offers its full assistance to you in preparing your attendance to the Forum in March'04.

Please join us in making World TB Day 2004 and the Second Stop TB Partners Forum a truly historic occasion. We look forward to hear your response and confirmations on your availability to participate in the Forum on World TB Day 2004. Our local conference organizer will then follow up with your delegation to make the necessary travel arrangements. To facilitate your participation, please indicate your contact details in your delegation list. Thank you for your continuing enthusiastic support of Stop TB.

Should you have questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat at stoptbinfo@who.int.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Marcos Espinal
Executive Secretary
Stop TB Partnership Secretariat
