HEADLINE: PanAfrica; New Plan to Stop Global Spread of Tuberculosis
Date: October 18, 2001 Thursday
Byline: The World Bank

BODY:
Afghanistan and Pakistan Two of the Worst Affected Countries.

George Soros will join the World Bank and the World Health Organization to launch a new plan to stop the global spread of TB. Four people die every minute somewhere from the disease which is spread through the air, attacking the lungs, and killing gradually and painfully. For example, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, already dealing with high infection rates and now home to hundreds of thousands of new refugees living in cramped conditions along their common border, the risk of even more people falling victim to the disease is very real.

This ancient disease took almost 2 million lives last year and its toll is growing rapidly in Africa and Asia because of TB's link with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
