                                    World TB Day Celebration 24th March 2001

On the Central Level:

Meeting of the National Board for TB Control under the Patronage of the Minister of Health and Population HE Prof.Dr.Ismaiel Salam.

Mass Media Activities:

5 TV spots about TB were made and broadcasted during March in times when people gather to watch the famous Egyptian episodes.

Radio Broadcasting for songs , Drama and interviews about TB for how to discover , what is the treatment and how far it is effective if taken properly and also the hazards of smoking physically ,environmentally and economically and what are the best ways to stop it.

During March Writers in the national newspapers started a campaign for social mobilization and advocacy about TB and smoking cessation, this media campaign will be an ongoing process throughout the year.

Posters by the famous artists were designed about DOTS, TB and smoking cessation.

A special edition of Ibn Sina newsletter published by the NTP Egypt includes articles about TB and smoking cessation.

A leaflet for smoking cessation was printed and distributed to all clinics in addition to the health education materials about TB information.

NGO Activities:

NGOs arranged several medical caravans to the slums throughout the country to increase the awareness about the TB, early detection, proper treatment and proper prophylaxis.

TOT were organized for training the members of the NGOs to be qualified to increase the knowledge of the target people about TB and smoking hazards.

Health Education meetings for the patients and their families during March were arranged and will be continued regularly. Posters for increasing the awareness about TB control and smoking cessation were made and distributed in different places. The Egyptian Society for chest diseases arranged a special session about TB in the annual scientific conference at the end of March for celebrating the World TB Day.

Articles about TB and smoking hazards were prepared to be distributed to the mosques and churches for the religious leaders to be broadcasted during Friday’s prayers and Sunday’s prayers.

Health Education Activities:

Intrasectoral collaboration between the Chest Directorate and the Health Education Directorate to celebrate the National TB Day by:

TOT Courses to prepare Health Education Teams for TB control and smoking cessation.

Health education teams arranged several meetings in the schools, these included information about TB control and early detection also about smoking hazards to decrease the initiation of smoking in young ages.

Increase the awareness of patients attending the Health Insurance clinics by the HIO doctors, nurses and social workers trained through the NTP and Health Education Directorate.

This poster stresses the importance of DOTS and its countrywide implementation

Prisons: 

It was agreed that the DOTS strategy would be implemented in all prisons together with increasing the health education activities in the prisons for the prisoners regarding TB and smoking.

The Universities:

This poster stresses early case detection by direct smear microscopy

An initiative presented by the vice president of Ain Shams University Prof. Dr.M.TagEldin to share with NTP the celebration of the National TB Day , the objectives of this initiative are:

Building highly qualified staff acquainted with the NTP and its objectives and strategy.

The NTP will provide the chest clinics in the Egyptian universities with the Health Education materials and the TB guide.

The universities started smoking cessation clinics provided by flyers and posters as health education articles. The universities started to activate the law, which prohibits smoking inside the campus.

The Governorates’ level:

Meetings were held in all Governorates attended by the ministers, governors, mass media, social figures, health education members and advocacy in different days throughout the month.

Meetings with students and teachers in the schools to increase the awareness of TB and smoking hazards.
