Headline: Ukraine marks World TB fight day

The World day of fighting tuberculosis is marked in Ukraine on Sunday.

Director of the Yanovsky phtisio-pulmonary institute, Yury Feshchenko, told reporters on Saturday that the total number of TB cases currently under supervision of medical institutions runs at about 680,000 in the country.

According to Feshchenko, Ukraine annually registers over 33, 000 fresh TB cases and about 11,000 deaths of the disease. He said that the TB death rate has stabilized thanks to better methods of exposure and registering of the patients. Ukraine saw a TB epidemic in 1995. Now the country is implementing a plan on the national program of fighting the disease for the years from 2002 to 2005.
