World TB Day: 24 March 2003
CAMBODIA
Proposed activities in the capital, Phnom Penh and in the provinces
The National Centre for Tuberculosis & Leprosy Control has proposed to observe the World TB Day with nation-wide activities aimed to raise the awareness of TB and the availability of DOTS. As part of the advocacy drive, meetings will be held in the all the provinces and districts which would target government officials, community representatives, teachers, students, TB patients, NGO representatives, local support groups and health workers.
In Phnom Penh, a meeting would be held at the National Centre for Tuberculosis & Leprosy Control under the Chairmanship of the Secretary of State. Participants will include officials from MoH, WHO, WFP, UNICEF, UNAIDS, Bilateral Organizations (JICA, USAID), NCHADS, Military Hospital, MEDICAM (umbrella organization for all NGOs), international donors, local partners, and staff from the CENAT and the National TB Hospital.
The Health Department of the Phnom Penh Municipality has planned to organize a procession through the main roads of the city to step up the awareness about TB and DOTS. Posters and banners will be displayed at important places. T-shirts with TB slogans (in Khmer) would be distributed to the TB patients (former & current), moto-taxi and cyclo-rickshaw drivers. The mass media would also propagate messages to highlight the World TB Day. Specially designed TV spots would increase TB awareness among the people on that day. WPRO has also agreed to provide 600 Stop TB advocacy kits and about 100 posters on this occasion.
In the provinces, similar functions would be held organized by the Provincial Health Departments under the Chairmanship of the Governors who head the Provincial TB Committees. Banners and posters at all TB units and Operational District offices would highlight the importance of the meetings and the processions by school children and health workers would raise TB awareness. The national TV channels would cover these events and would telecast it on the same day.
