ABOUT NATRAG
The National Tuberculosis Research and Action Group (NATRAG), a non-governmental, non-profit organisation in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) will be celebrating this years World TB Day on the 24th of March, 2003. This years theme is DOTS CURED ME. IT WILL CURE YOU TOO. The focus of the celebrations this year is to reassure TB sufferers that the disease is curable if medical care is sought early and the treatment regimen adhered strictly to under the Directly Observed treatment Short Course (DOTS) programme designed by the WHO.
The National Tuberculosis Research and Action Group (NATRAG) was formed in the year 2002 at a National Workshop held by NIMR for TB researchers. At this workshop, it was highlighted that Nigeria ranked 4th of the 22 countries with the highest burden of tuberculosis worldwide. The incidence rate is currently put at 300 cases per 100, 000 population every year. This is a precarious situation as each of these cases has the potential of spreading the infection to about 12 people every year. In order to stem this multiplier effect and to bring succor to millions of sufferers, majority of whom are poor, NATRAG was formed. Its aim is to complement governments efforts in the management and control of TB. This group will be formerly inaugurated during this years World TB Day celebrations.
OUR VISION: To achieve for Nigeria in particular and the world at large a Tuberculosisfree environment.
OUR MISSION: To elevate the health status of the Nigerian populace through creation of awareness about TB and related infections; Provision of access to free and effective medical care for TB patients and the promotion of drug resistance surveillance to ensure effective management and control of TB and related diseases.
Membership of NATRAG is open to professionals in all fields of endeavour as we hope to employ a multidisciplinary approach to the anti-tuberculosis campaign. We are willing to provide further information about NATRAG on request.
