What New York City is doing for the World TB Day 2003
While the World TB Day is March 24, 2002, New York City (NYC) Department of
Healths TB Bureau (including its 4 field offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens,
Bronx/Staten Island) will be participating in various activities from March 22 to March 30
to raise peoples awareness about TB and what to do about it.
The target groups this year are immigrant populations in NYC that are at higher risk of
having
or contracting TB (because they are from some countries or regions where TB is more
prevalent than others) and some immune suppressed populations in NYC. They include
Spanish-speaking immigrants from South and Central America, Asians from China and South
Asia, speaking Chinese, Urdu, Hindi or Bengali and visitors to some clinics in NYC.
Following are some of the activities:
TV:
- TV appearance by Dr. Sonal Munsiff, Director of the NYC TB program, on ITV Gold (which
reaches to South Asian population in NYC and surrounding areas) on March 24, 2003, 6.10 pm
to 7 pm on a live call in show discussing TB.
Dissemination of TB information and one on one talks with public:
- At the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service office in NYC where immigrant/
potential immigrant individuals wait in lines outside the building. Some of the TB
programs multi-lingual staff will communicate with multi-cultural people and
distribute TB information materials in 8 languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese,
French, French-Creole, Hindi and Urdu). Also, a table will be set up inside the lobby of
this U.S. government building with TB banners and educational materials for visitors.
- In some of NYCs major ethnic shopping areas, some religious places (such as
churches) and clinics, by TB staff.
- Some field offices are organizing education or publicity work at some hospitals, day-
laborer gathering places and community centers.
