Questions & Answers The Call to Stop TB
Each year, nearly 9 million people get TB of whom 2 million die of the disease. Nearly 2 billion people, equal to a third of the world's total population, are infected with TB bacilli, the microbes that cause TB. We have made tremendous progress in most areas of the world with more than 21 million TB patients having been treated under DOTS programmes since 1995, but much work remains to be done. The Stop TB Partnership has set targets of halving 1990 prevalence and death rates by 2015 in support of the Millennium Development Goals. The Partnership's new Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015 is a robust strategic blueprint that lays out how these targets can be reached. If fully implemented it will enable the treatment of 50 million people for TB, save 14 million lives, and lead to the development of powerful new TB tools that will be vital to eliminating TB by 2050. But fully implementing the Global Plan will only be possible if there is sufficient political and financial commitment. To understand how important funding this plan is, key policy makers need to hear from all of us.
What is The Call to Stop TB?
The Call to Stop TB is a campaign to rally people to fight TB by endorsing a call for full financing and implementation of the Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015. In particular, we are seeking endorsements from representatives of organizations. The Call to Stop TB is engaging both established TB partners and others who share our concern that TB can and must be addressed to prevent needless deaths and alleviate poverty. Endorsements will be collected and will be presented at key political events in an effort to raise the profile of TB on political and development agendas.
TB is often thought of as an ancient disease that plagued communities in years gone by, not as a current threat. Nothing could be further from the truth. TB kills more people today than ever before in history and remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, one that is airborne and can cross borders with ease. The Call to Stop TB will raise awareness of TB and the opportunity to make significant inroads against the disease. Health care organizations, community members, advocates, health workers and others can speak with one voice through this campaign. Together, we can raise awareness about TB, and the urgent need for investment in the Global Plan.
What is the goal of the Call to Stop TB?
The goal of the Call to Stop TB is to raise awareness about TB and galvanize support for the Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015 from the world’s governments, organizations, civil society, corporations and individuals.
