Dr. Kent R. Hill, Assistant Administrator for Global Health, United States Agency for International Development

  • “USAID has a clear strategy that works to detect and treat people with TB in countries most affected by it. In addition, we are making progress to prevent and control TB. In 2005 the rate of new cases of TB worldwide leveled off for the first time since the World Health Organization (WHO) began collecting data about the disease. And the rate at which TB is detected has doubled since 2000. Globally the target of successfully treating 85% of TB cases has been met, and we continue to make steady progress toward the target of 70% case detection.”

Dr Hussein A. Gezairy, Regional Director, WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region

  • “Amid the warnings from WHO in its recent report Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in the world concerning the need to address tuberculosis drug resistance, the Eastern Mediterranean Region continues to struggle against tuberculosis, losing more than 110 000 human lives every year. This is a region which is home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world, yet here in the 21st century, this preventable and curable disease continues to cause human suffering and the loss of much needed productivity, increasing the burden on economies and tightening the poverty trap.”

Winstone Zulu, Stop TB Partnership-Kochon Prize Winner

  • “As we mark World TB Day, I would like to urge all individuals, families, communities and governments to do everything in their power to stop tuberculosis. Although TB is a preventable and curable disease it has remained one of the largest infectious killers of people in the world. In my part of the world TB is the largest cause of death in people living with HIV. This need not be so.

Governments all over the world must support the Global Plan to stop this unnecessary pandemic by among other things creating national stop TB initiatives and partnerships. They must use their resources to finance research and development into diagnostic tools, new fast-acting and less toxic drugs as well as an effective vaccine. Above all, governments must mobilize the human resource needed to combat TB.”

Statement of support from Ambassador Mark Dybul, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, on the occasion of World TB Day 2008

  • “TB is the number one killer of people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. This is why the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is leading a unified U.S. Government global response to scale-up HIV and TB collaborative activities through partnerships with host nations. These partnerships support national health authorities, non-governmental organizations, and community- and faith-based organizations to strengthen and implement effective TB/HIV activities. PEPFAR will continue to maximize its resources with our international and country partners to support the global response in combating and ultimately conquering both HIV/AIDS and TB around the world.”

David R. Brennan, Chief Executive Officer, AstraZeneca

  • “Improving healthcare in the developing world requires genuine partnership between governments, NGOs, healthcare professionals, local leaders and the business community. At AstraZeneca we believe in the power of these partnerships, which is why we have committed scientific expertise and financial investment to find an effective and simple treatment for TB”

Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, President and CEO of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria

  • “On World TB Day, it's important to recognize that the innovation and creativity of business is a critical component in the fight against tuberculosis. By working in concert with public health agencies and civil society, the private sector is poised to broaden the reach and effectiveness of TB interventions and turn the tide against this dangerous and growing global epidemic.”

Edward J. Ludwig, BD Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

  • “Effectively diagnosing and treating tuberculosis is one of the world's most pressing healthcare needs. To address this global problem, it takes public-private collaborations, such as the one BD enjoys with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics to improve access to TB testing and provide needed technical assistance to areas burdened most by this deadly disease.”

Dr Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

  • “Partnerships like Stop TB are key to winning the fight against tuberculosis. To date, Global Fund-supported programs have treated 3.3 million people under DOTS. Join me in calling on governments, non-governmental organizations and implementing partners to submit ambitious proposals in Round 8. Together we can realize our vision of a world free of the burden of TB.”

Jorge Sampaio, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Stop TB

  • “TB is a leading cause of illness and death among people living with HIV; and in many parts of the world HIV is fuelling the TB epidemic. On this World TB Day, I call on all countries, communities, international agencies and donors to take action on the HIV/TB co-epidemic. On June 9, a first HIV-TB Global Leaders Forum will take place, at the United Nations in New York, aimed at achieving a unified international position on the accelerated and intensified action needed to respond to the deadly HIV-TB joint epidemic”

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

  • “On World TB Day 2008 I wish to state that Brazil is stopping TB." We have a high burden of TB in our country but are striving to get diagnosis and treatment to people who need it. And in March 2009 we will host the third Stop TB Partners Forum. Please join us.”

Sidney Taurel, CEO, Eli Lilly and Company

  • “Preventing and treating TB is a shared responsibility. All strains of TB are airborne – anyone on a plane, train, bus, or in the workplace is potentially at risk. The good news: it can be managed and cured. Each member of the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership does what it does best – from transferring manufacturing technology to reducing stigma; we are committed to fighting this global pandemic from every angle. One organization or government cannot successfully control this disease alone – we must work together.”
