Joint Meeting of the DOTS Expansion, TB/HIV and DOTS-Plus for MDR-TB Working Groups in Memory of Lisa Véron

Palais des Congrès, Versailles, France 15-17 October
Palais des Congrès, Paris, France 18 October

The first Joint Meeting of the Stop TB DOTS Expansion, TB/HIV and DOTS-Plus for MDR-TB Working Groups was held in Versailles and Paris from 15 to 18 October. This meeting convened over 400 persons including programme managers for TB and HIV from the 22 High Burden Countries and other countries with high HIV or MDR-TB prevalence, technical and donor agencies, representatives of the community affected with TB and TB/HIV, academic institutions, etc. At the meeting, the WHO-recommended Stop TB Strategy and the International Standards for TB Care were endorsed. There was a strong call to ensure that all stakeholders are urgently made aware of these approaches, and that countries drive them forward through regional and national plans, with the help of partners. The draft Global Plan to Stop TB, 2006-2015 is seen as a critical document in this process. Its elements were endorsed with a call that the global movement for universal access to care by 2010 is strongly recognized as an aim within the document. The emergency in Africa was highlighted, along with the need to address the ongoing challenges globally, including the need to quickly scale-up TB-HIV and MDR-TB response. TB control must become a political issue and recognized as a human rights imperative.
