AR Rahman : Global Ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership

On 10 March 2004 India's pre-eminent musician/composer AR Rahman was formally announced as the first Global Ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership at a media event at the House of Commons in London. On 24 March, World TB Day, he attended the inaugural session of the 2nd Stop TB Partners' Forum in New Delhi, a major international gathering of over 300 delegates including donors, technical agencies, non-governmental organizations and ministerial delegations from 22 high TB burden countries. The Forum was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in the presence of Rahman, WHO Director General LEE Jong-Wook, the Indian Minister of Health and other dignitaries.

AR Rahman is collaborating with the Stop TB Partnership to promote awareness about a disease that continues to kill 2 million people every year. Rahman will support the partnership's advocacy efforts to meet the 2005 targets of increasing case detection under DOTS to 70% and successfully treating 85% of detected cases, an essential milestone to meeting the Millennium Development Goals of halving TB prevalence and mortality by 2015.
