Delegates join first African regional conference on TB pharmaceutical management

19 July 2011 - Johannesburg - To emphasize the critical nature of pharmaceutical management in the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), the Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems Program of Management Sciences for Health, funded by the US Agency for International Development, joined the World Health Organization and the Stop TB Partnership to host the first Africa regional conference on strengthening TB pharmaceutical management systems to fight drug-resistant TB.

The conference brought together more than 120 delegates from more than 25 African countries to share ideas and experiences on how to ensure universal access to quality TB medicines and commodities and contain drug resistance. Participants included representatives from national TB programmes, ministries of health, donors, UN agencies, international and local NGOs, academia and the private sector.

The interactive three-day conference consisted of panel discussions and break-out discussion groups where participants developed recommendations for action in the region to improve TB medicines management. These recommendations will be disseminated widely for countries to adopt and implement.
