BRAC to publish book on community-based approaches to TB control.
20 September 2011 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - BRAC, a non-governmental organization (NGO) will release a book documenting its history and approach to Tuberculosis (TB) control in October.
Making Tuberculosis History: Community-based Solutions for Millions, provides a complete account of BRAC's community-based programme. Over the past 27 years, the NGO has provided access to lifesaving diagnostics and treatment for hundreds of thousands of people.
In Bangladesh, as part of a large consortium of NGO partners led by the National TB Program, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, BRAC covers over 90 million through shasthya shebikas, women working as community health volunteers, providing daily supervised treatment (DOTS) to almost 100,000 patients with a 92% cure rate.
As well as documenting BRAC's activities, the book explores the wider systems for TB control in Bangladesh and BRAC’s partnerships with stakeholders including the government, NGOs, donors and technical experts, and diverse groups such as garment factories and prison authorities.
BRAC will launch the book on October 27th at the Union World Conference on Lung Health. For more details on the event or Making Tuberculosis History, please visit the conference website or the BRAC blog.
