Kenyan Maasai community spreads the TB message with bead jewelry

25 October - Kajiada, Kenya - A group of Maasai men and women have come together to work on an innovative project which spreads the message about tuberculosis (TB) while earning an income for the participants.

The group, which was formed by TB ACTION Group (TAG) Kenya and Enai Africa group, is making bead bracelets, chains, key holders and other accessories bearing the Stop TB slogan.

Lucy Chesire, Executive Director of TAG Kenya brought a selection of Stop TB bracelets to the Union World Conference on Lung Health in Lille, France, which sold out within days.

The group making the bead jewelry is comprised of former TB patients who use their experience with TB to educate others in their communities. Stigma around TB is common in the Maasai community.

TAG and ENAI Africa plan to roll out the project across Kajiado County and increase international sales.
