Stop TB Symposium focuses on women and children


26 October 2011 - Lille, France - The 2011 Stop TB Symposium at the Union World Conference on Lung Health focussed on tuberculosis (TB) in women and children.

Topics discussed included:

  • The latest TB epidemiology data from the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global TB Control report which, for the first time, includes estimates of TB in women and children.
  • The increased risk of mothers transmitting HIV to their children among women who are ill with TB.
  • The integration of maternal and infant care which could contribute to decreasing mortality in pregnant women.
  • Screening pregnant women for TB in high burden settings.
  • TB screening and case detection by maternal health services.
  • WHO Europe's action plan to combat drug-resistant TB.
  • Country presentations from Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia and Yemen.
  • Using the Xpert MTB/RIF test to diagnose pulmonary TB in children
  • New fixed-dose combination drugs for children with TB
  • Expanding access to TB treatment and care for women and children.
