PATH and WHO hold training workshop on MDR-TB control toolkit

30 October 2011 - Lille, France - At the Union World Conference on Lung Health, PATH and the World Health Organization (WHO) presented a workshop on multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) control. Nearly 60 participants were introduced to a MDR-TB Planning Toolkit, developed by PATH and WHO, which contains guidance on key steps in the planning process, including identifying gaps, developing objectives and monitoring progress for MDR-TB prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Speakers at the workshop explained current epidemiology and approaches, presented an example from the Philippines National TB Programme, and gave attendees the opportunity to try out some of the planning tools.

The toolkit is intended for use by countries, technical partners, international organizations and donors who want to improve the detection and treatment of MDR-TB.

An MDR-TB assessment and monitoring tool, on which the new toolkit is based, is also available in English, Russian, and Spanish. Support for development of both the original tool and the expanded toolkit was provided by the United States Agency for International Development.

The monitoring tool and toolkit are available online.
