U.S. Government extends commitment to combat tuberculosis in Ethiopia

23 February 2015 - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - On February 18 Ethiopia inaugurated renovated TB laboratories and an outpatient department in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The renovated facilities at ALERT and St Peter's will increase the capacity of the country to successfully manage drug-resistant TB, which is becoming a major public health threat.

Dr. Taye Tolera, Head of Office of the State Minister and Mr. Peter Vrooman, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission in Ethiopia opened the facilities, together with Dr. Eveline Klinkenberg, Acting Country Director TB CARE I/Challenge TB.

The ceremony also marked the launch of Challenge TB, USAID’s follow-on five-year activity designed to reduce significantly the TB disease burden in Ethiopia.
