| Organization Description: |
1. Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation: Purpose, Activities, Funding
The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation (formerly known as the Sequella Global Tuberculosis Foundation) was founded in 1997 to help develop new concepts and tools to control the global TB epidemic. In 1999 the Foundation received a 5-year US$25 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fund the TB Vaccine Collaboration. Now the organization focuses solely on developing new vaccines against tuberculosis and ensuring that they are distributed to all who need them.
Aeras is the only non-profit group solely dedicated to developing new TB vaccines. It is the goal of Aeras to develop, test, characterize, license, manufacture and distribute a new TB vaccine within 10 years. Aeras plans to forge vaccine development partnerships among government research agencies, the vaccine industry, and academia to break the logjam that has held up TB vaccine development.
Aeras performed the preclinical evaluation and regulatory activities for a new recombinant BCG vaccine candidate and initiated a Phase I trial of the vaccine in early 2004. Aeras has worked with the University of Cape Town to establish a clinical research site in Cape Town, South Africa, where a Phase IV BCG trial has enrolled >10,000 volunteers. This site along with two others in locations yet to be determined will be used for Phase I, II and III trials of vaccine candidates.
In February 2004, Aeras received a grant of US$82.9 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for development and testing of new TB vaccines. Aeras has a goal of raising a total of US$250 million over the next five years and is currently seeking funding from other foundations, government agencies and international organizations.
Aeras is led by Jerald C. Sadoff, MD, who has worked in vaccine development for more than 30 years. Before joining Aeras as President & CEO in 2003, Dr. Sadoff served as clinical director for vaccine development at Merck and Director of the Division of Communicable Diseases and Immunology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
2. INTEREST IN BELONGING TO STOP TB PARTNERSHIP
The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation supports and endorses the mission of the Global Partnership to Stop TB vision as described in the 2001 Global Plan to Stop Tuberculosis: •To ensure every TB patient access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; •To stop the worldwide transmission of TB; •To reduce the inequitable social and economic toll of TB; and •To develop and implement new preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic tools and strategies to eliminate TB.
Of particular interest to Aeras is the goal of the Partnership’s Working Group on TB Vaccine Development to have a “safe, effective and reasonably priced TB vaccine licensed for global distribution by 2015, and to have the vaccine widely used in TB high-burden countries by 2020.” Aeras whole-heartedly supports this goal and is actively working to make it a reality by forging public-private partnerships throughout the world to develop, test, characterize, license, manufacture and distribute a new TB vaccine within 10 years. If accepted to become a Stop TB Partner, Aeras will welcome the opportunity to join with others in the Partnership to accelerate vaccine development and ensure that better TB vaccines are distributed to all who need them around the world. |
