| Organization Description: |
For more than one hundred years, the American Red Cross (ARC) has been giving people who can help others a means to reach those in need—and, in the process, preventing and relieving human suffering and saving lives. Founded in 1881 and chartered by the US Congress in 1905 as the only voluntary agency “to carry out a system of national and international relief in time of peace,” this humanitarian, volunteer-led organization is part of the worldwide Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement. All Red Cross/Red Crescent activities are guided by seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. This unique network of 181 national societies—which covers almost every country in the world—is a prime strength in reaching communities and individuals in need in accordance with its mission to assist the world’s most vulnerable people. The national societies have 105 million volunteers and 300,000 employees who assist more than 233 million beneficiaries yearly. Their programs and services address both immediate and long-term needs and include emergency shelter; food and medicine; water and sanitation; community-based health and care; control and prevention of diseases, including TB; HIV/AIDs prevention; blood donor recruitment, collection, and supply; first aid training; disaster preparedness; and restoring family contact for disaster victims. |
