Regional Tuberculosis Control Unit for the North West Region of Cameroon. It is in charge of coordination, management and improvement of TB control activities in the North West region of Cameroon. We do supervision, monitoring and evaluation of TB related activities including TB/HIV coinfection collaborative activities. We are interested in TB control activities because it is a big threat to public and individual health in our country.

Our organization is a regional office of the National TB control programme. As such we implement all activities earmarked by the National plan at the regional level. We are accountable to the National Director.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

DOTS Expansion and Enhancement:
We are involved in advocacy communication and social mobilization in our local communities to join in the fight against TB.Most families have been infected or affected with TB in our region and so we work with people to sensitize the population for early diagnosis and improved cure rates for our patients.

Drug-Resistant TB:
We have recently developed a state of the art TB reference laboratory in our regional Hospital capable of doing culture and DST. We are requesting sputum specimens from all retreatment cases from the region to do culture and DST in order to diagnose early enough Drug resistant TB and put them on treatment. We are also in the process of building a new TB ward to admit both drug sensitive and drug resistant cases of TB.

TB-HIV:
We implement all WHO TB/HIV collaborative activities, and have put in place a surveillance system to follow-up all TB/HIV coinfected patients.

Laboratory Strengthening:
We have recently developed a state of the art TB reference laboratory in our regional Hospital capable of doing culture and DST. We also have now available real time PCR for Mycobacterium, and also do liquid culture, for fast diagnosis and early initiation of patients on treatment.
