USAF School of Aerspace Medicine (USAFSAM)

USAFSAM is actively engaged in supporting multisectoral efforts to assess and enhance TB diagnostics. The objective is to facilitate identification of persons with evidence of M. tuberculosis infection (both latent and active) so prophylaxis or treatment can be instituted.

Supports development and periodic assessment of USAF/Department of Defense (DoD) TB screening/testing policies through the DoD's Joint Preventive Medicine Policy Group.

Conducts and supports clinical trials to assess and enhance applications of TB diagnostics.

Propose and Lead multiple Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) efforts to develop novel TB diagnostics.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

Laboratory Strengthening:
USAFSAM used 3 SBIR Phase I and 1 SBIR Phase II efforts to develop automation enabling software for the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube assay (Cellestis, Inc) to facilitate assay reproducibility, reduce indeterminate rates, enable test validation and electronic results reporting. The outcome product (ImmunoFit; Celadon Laboratories, Inc) is now commercially available (see http://www.celadonlabs.com/products_immuno-fit.htm).

New Diagnostics:
USAFSAM/PHR has received $1,049,291 under SBIR O112-H05-3116 to fund 7 SBIR Phase I proposals for developing novel TB diagnostics. The TPOC is Dr. Donald Goodwin.
