| Organization Description: |
ZEChiDEF is a Private Voluntary Organisation operating in Zimbabwe and working with communities to promote survival, well-being and development of children, particularly very young children. ZEChiDEF was established in 2007 as a community based organisation (CBO). The organisation was formed after the realisation that a considerable number of children are not reaching their full potential in mental and social development owing to extreme poverty, poor health and nutrition. For optimal development children need loving, warm, consistent and responsive care givers, within a stimulating environment, with play materials, and opportunities for interaction and learning. Underpinning all of this are good nutrition and health. Low levels of parental education and increased stress brought about by HIV/AIDS and related diseases, poverty and economic hardships have led to poor parenting skills, poor child health and nutrition, and a learning environment with limited stimulation impacting on brain development and function of children.
ZEChiDEF is interested in TB because TB is one of the leading causes of death in children in Zimbabwe.Young children are at risk of becoming infected with in Early Childhood Development Centres. They are also at high risk of developing active tuberculosis because the immune system of young children is less developed. In HIV infected children the risk of developing TB meningitis is very high and often result in deafness, blindness, paralysis and mental retardation.
Tuberculosis and malnutrition often go together, and a child with TB disease often fail to develop normally. ZEChiDEF is committed to ensure the proper and normal development of children by working to reduce the vulnerability of children to TB infection.
ZEChiDEF works with ECD Centres ensuring that all adults who come into contact with children are tested for TB. ZEChiDEF also runs TB awareness campaigns to educate children and communities on the prevention and management of TB |
