Betty Nanyanzi, 32 years old. I tested HIV in 1993. After giving birth I had herpes zoster and so I went for a test. It was positive. I tested my child and she was positive as well. I felt really bad and guilty. I was unemployed at the time. My child was tested in 1995 and has been in good health. My husband died of AIDS in 1997. I found it very hard to get a job. With the help of TASO (The AIDS Support Organisation Uganda Ltd) I am much better. I got TB more than 2 months ago. I was really sick with my TB. I lost weight, had no appetite and was sweating lots at night. I also had this cough. I have no idea where I could have got it. I had my child tested for TB but she is OK. She has cerebral meningitis at the moment but she is getting better. TASO gives me my TB drugs free. I have had no problems or side effects with the TB drugs. And I will take them to the end. I know what will happen if I don?t. I have felt no stigma with TB. When my husband died in 1997, I joined the drama group here at TASO. I work 2 days a week. We go to the villages and schools and put on plays about HIV/AIDS and TB to sensitise the communities. Bono, the singer of U2, supports the drama group.
