Organization Description:
Health Alive Foundation is a national, non-governmental, non-profit and apolitical organization established in 1999 with headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State. We were registered with the state in 2002 and with the corporate affairs commission in 2004.Our vision is to keep health Alive and make life fulfilling and meaningful for all individuals and couples in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.Our mission is to provide service with integrity to humanity through promotion and implementation of programs that enhance health indices of women, children and the Nigeria Society at large.
We see TB as a public health problem affecting individuals and the entire society.
Our TB control involved advocacy, communication and social mobilization of communities against the scourge of TB. We worked with community leaders and members on spreading information about DOTS and also carried out interpersonal communication and counseling for youths on tuberculosis. IEC materials have also been distributed in various communities. We have trained over 270 CBOs and over 2700 community volunteers to provide community TB care in 18 states in Nigeria

Please tell us how your organization is contributing to your country's national TB control plan:
We are currently a Sub-recipient of the Global Fund TB Project under Association for Reproductive and Family Heath. We are anchoring the Community TB Care component of the grant in 24 States of the Federation.
We are working with over 400 CBOs who provide social mobilization on TB issues and over 4500 community volunteers who have been trained to identify and refer suspects. This CVs are linked to the DOT centres for easy referral and access to health care.
We have successfully rolled out the project in 18 States while taken over the initial 6 States where the project was piloted, making a total of 24 states where we are at present. This is due to our vast experience in Social Mobilisation and Training. We were sub-sub recipients in the Global Fund Round 5 Phase II TB Project with Inter-Gender Development Centre, Jos, in the 3rd and 6th quarter of the year 2007/2008. We were involved in advocacy, communication and social mobilization of communities against the scourge of TB. We worked with community leaders and members on spreading information about DOTS and also carried out interpersonal communication and counseling for youths on tuberculosis. IEC materials have also been distributed in various communities.

Health Alive Foundation has also been actively involved in training and re-training generally, and also of community health workers/volunteers in the area of TB and HIV as a template for building the capacity and improving community care and support. Health Alive Foundation has established an extensive network of community based organizations within its area of coverage to help carry out its various activities.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
We have over 400 CBOs that are carrying out social mobilization on quarterly basis in the over 700 communities. Over 4000 community volunteers identifying suspects and making referrals withing the communities.

Drug-Resistant TB:
Our organization has been engaged by the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) to handle the community MDR-TB in the country following the success achieved in CTBC and the level of process, transparency and accountability in place.

TB-HIV:
We have trained over 150 support group members across 24 states in Nigeria on basic facts on TB, Infection Control and other issues as it relates to TB/HIV Linkage.
