Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tuberculosis Diagnostic Research

McGill University & McGill University Health Centre - Montreal, Canada
September 2012

The McGill group has been actively involved in TB diagnostic research, focused mainly on clinical and field evaluation of new or improved tools. The group is also actively working on novel methodological, statistical and modeling approaches to diagnostics research. Ongoing work includes development of rapid tests for EPTB, evaluation of the clinical impact and cost-effectiveness of molecular diagnostics, modeling of TB diagnostics, and assessing barriers to the use of POC tests.

Applications are invited from recent PhD or MD graduates for a one year, full-time fellowship, starting September 2012. The postdoctoral fellow will participate fully in teaching, research and related scholarly activities, and function specifically as a junior investigator on an implementation science project aimed at identifying barriers to POC testing in India and South Africa, and development of target product profiles (TPPs) for point-of-care (POC) TB testing.

The announcement provides more details about requirements, responsibilities and application procedures.

Union Public Health, Young Investigator and Scientific Prizes

Applications and nominations are now being accepted for The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease annual awards. The awards recognize achievements in tuberculosis or another area of lung health and are presented at The Union World Conference on Lung Health which will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 13 to 17 November.

The three categories of awards are the Karel Styblo Public Health Prize, which honors physicians, health workers or community organizations for contributions over a period of 10 or more years; The Union Young Investigator Prize, which honors publications in the past five years when the researcher was 35 years old or younger; and The Union Scientific Prize, which honors researchers at any stage of their career. Both nominations and self-nominations are accepted.

Grand Challenges Canada - Rising Stars in Global Health

A funding program targeted at innovators in low- and lower-middle-income countries

Grand Challenges Canada seeks proposals for innovative solutions integrated with delivery mechanisms that could be easily implemented in developing countries to improve global health. Grand Challenges Canada is looking for ideas that are bold and creative, and that have the potential to make a substantial impact on a global health problem. Ideas should address complex real-world challenges that involve a scientific or technological solution (new or existing) alone or in combination with social and/or business innovations.

NIH/NIAID Grant - Partnerships for Development of Therapeutics and Diagnostics for Biodefense (R01)

This initiative will support development of diagnostics to rapidly identify NIAID Category A, B or C agents and their resistance profiles. Diagnostics are needed to identify infectious agents or toxins in diverse clinical samples (swabs, sputum, blood, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, stool, etc.) from individuals at multiple stages of infection/intoxication. Thus, diagnostics applications must focus on detection and identification of biological threat agents in human clinical samples.

Announcement by TB CDRC - Call for concepts

The TB Clinical Diagnostics Research Consortium (TB CDRC) is pleased to join the Stop TB Partnership and the other 420 members of the Working Group on New TB Diagnostics. We have a shared vision of developing more accurate and cost-effective diagnostic tools and strategies for combating TB globally. We applaud the steps outlined in "The Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015" and believe that we can positively and significantly impact the TB diagnostic development pipeline.

The TB-CDRC was created through an NIAID contract and has as its mission conducting the initial feasibility studies of new diagnostics at our clinical sites in South Africa, Uganda, Brazil, and South Korea. We encourage anyone with a promising diagnostic ready for its first clinical study to contact us. To begin the dialog with our program please visit our website: http://www.tbcdrc.org, and to join our email list: tbcdrc_helpdesk@westat.com.
