Stop TB Partnership

Challenge Facility Good Practice

Wote Youth Development in Kenya is providing treatment support to Brian, a 20-year old high-school graduate that fell ill with tuberculosis.

The email further explains: "Brian was tested and found sero-negative for HIV. Through the Stop TB Partnership Brian will have the option to have the assistance from a community treatment supporter who will support him in taking his drugs regularly. Brian and other like him are grateful to the unseen donor (stoptb challenge facility). It is my duty to make sure Brian and others do not die of TB." -signed by Peter Owiti, Director, Wote Youth.

Integrated Development in Focus (DIF) was formed as a capacity building social development agency involved primarily in poverty reduction, preventive health education, reproductive health, and the development of networks to empower poor vulnerable women, youth and children, to realize their own development. The organisation assists communities to work effectively with established traditional community processes of collective problem solving.

Ghana Health Services designated communities where DIF could implement the CFCS project. Although the community assigned is hard to reach for DIF staff and difficult to work with because of their high expectations in return for attending DIF activities, very positive unexpected outcomes were reported: the occurrence of unplanned spontaneous activities by the community, for example.

NGO staff did not give trainings themselves, the trainings were conducted by staff from the municipality. Afterwards, the community demanded more efforts and education on TB from the trained volunteers. DIF won the TB Survival Prize 2009 for its innovative and empowering campaigns in uplifting communities affected by TB and MDR-TB. Nominations for the award were judged by a jury and chaired by Nobel Laureate Betty Williams.
