FIND and TB Alliance Symposium

Thursday, 31 October 2013, 13:30-17:15

Palais des Congrès, Paris, France

Chairpersons: Catharina Boehme, FIND and Mel Spigelman, TB Alliance

FIND and TB Alliance will organize a joint symposium on the theme of “Alignment of drug susceptibility testing and new TB drug regimens” to be held in conjunction with the upcoming Union World Conference in Paris.

The symposium will highlight how new anti-TB drugs coupled with innovations in diagnostics hold great promise to improve patient outcomes. New drug regimens require new approaches to drug susceptibility testing and their successful adoption relies on future availability of assays that will effectively assess resistance to new compounds. Coordinated efforts from early development stage to implementation are underway to ensure that complementary novel tools can make a key contribution to the effective management of drug-resistant TB.

The session will review the status of TB drug and diagnostic development with a particular focus on detection of drug-resistance. Presentations will update on progress made in the TB drug development pipeline, on latest knowledge of resistance mechanisms and on examples by industry partners of promising technologies for the development of practical DST assays. Speakers will also discuss how modeling studies can help drive development choices and design appropriate diagnostic algorithms in countries and will describe the role of drug sensitivity testing in clinical trials for TB drugs.

The agenda of the symposium will be available soon.
