In Memoriam: Chairman Kim of the Kochon Foundation

The Stop TB Partnership mourns the passing of Chairman Kim of the Kochon Foundation, a steadfast advocate in the global fight against tuberculosis (TB). His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the TB community worldwide.

Chairman Kim studied law in Korea and began his distinguished legal career there. He served as Chief Judge of the High Court in Korea and later as President of the Korean Bar Association. Recognizing his contributions to the Korean legal community, he was awarded the Civil Merit, the nation’s highest civilian honour.

In 1990, he was appointed as the second Chairman of the Kochon Foundation, a position he held for 34 years. Established in 1973 by the late Chong Kun Lee, the Kochon Foundation has been dedicated to enhancing human health and welfare. Under Chairman Kim's stewardship, the Foundation became a cornerstone in the battle against TB, championing innovation, and community empowerment.

One of Chairman Kim's most enduring legacies is the Kochon Prize, initiated in 2006 in honor of the Foundation's founder. This prestigious annual award, presented by the Stop TB Partnership, recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to combating TB. With a prize amount of US$65,000, it stands as the largest award specifically devoted to TB.

Over the years, the Kochon Prize has honoured a diverse array of recipients, reflecting the multifaceted approach required to tackle TB. Notable awardees include:
