In Memoriam of Dr. Arifin Panigoro

Today is a very sad day for the global fight against tuberculosis (TB), as we mourn the passing of our dear friend, mentor, champion, partner, and esteemed colleague, Dr. HC. Ir. H. Arifin Panigoro bin Yusuf Panigoro.

Arifin was well-known for his big heart many selfless acts and as a result, was much loved by all those who knew him. He was a true champion for people across the world battling TB, including the outstanding caregivers, looking after those affected by this terrible disease.

Throughout his life, Arifin deeply touched many hearts, especially in his native Indonesia, where he was instrumental in many efforts to help combat TB. He successfully contributed to placing the TB response high on Indonesia’s political agenda, including the Presidential Regulation on TB Care and Prevention, passed in 2021.

Coming from a background of a successful entrepreneur in the energy sector, his remarkable efforts in fighting TB in Indonesia started side-by-side with his wife, who leads the Indonesian Association of Tuberculosis Eradication (PPTI). In 2018, he successfully established and led the Indonesian Strategic TB Partnership Foundation or Stop TB Partnership Indonesia (STPI).

“I am completely devastated by the death of Dr. Arifin Panigoro. For me, he was the engine behind STPI, who tirelessly contributed to the main achievements for the TB response in Indonesia. His passing is a huge loss for the entire global TB community and he will be deeply missed,” said Dr. Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership. “His legacy will forever live on and his always great advice and energy will continue to inspire us to move boldly and decisively to fight this disease in Indonesia and the world. The Stop TB Partnership will continue to honor his memory and continue his legacy by fighting to end TB. We pay our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues across the globe.”
