In Memoriam: Professor Luis Cuevas

03 January 2023- The Stop TB Partnership is deeply saddened that on January 2, 2023 Professor Luis Cuevas, a great friend, partner, and TB champion, passed away in the presence of his family.

Luis was originally from Guatemala and worked at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for many decades where he was instrumental in bringing better diagnostics to people with TB and other infectious diseases. Luis was one of the leading minds and voices on TB diagnostics globally and in addition to his vast technical knowledge he also cared deeply about social justice. He was a mentor to many in the TB community, always willing to support and encourage new ideas. His expansive work of hundreds of research articles provided evidence for global policy on same day diagnostics and community-based active case finding for people with TB. He partnered with groups all over the globe from Brazil to Yemen, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Laos to deliver care to people with TB and conduct research for their benefit. Luis served on Global Fund’s Technical Review Panel and TB REACH’s Proposal Review Committee where he chaired one of the funding rounds. Luis was a wonderful friend and colleague, always up for an adventure and good times with those who knew him and those he just met.

At Stop TB, we want to share our deepest sympathies with grieving families, friends, and colleagues and we will miss him immensely.
