The world adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Goal N°6 was targeting to halt the TB epidemic by 2015.
The World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed the establishment of a Global Partnership to Stop TB.
Washington Commitment to Stop TB

The First Stop TB Partners' Forum was held in Washington, seeing the launch of the first Global Plan to Stop TB 2001-2005, the overarching framework for Stop TB Partnership's combined actions.
The Global Drug & Diagnostics Facility has changed the landscape of TB care since its creation in 2001 by increasing access to high quality and affordable TB treatments & diagnostics to population in need. By the end 2016, GDF has delivered more than 30 million treatment courses to 137 countries.

The Second Stop TB Partners' Forum was held in New Delhi, setting the frame for guiding the Partnership's efforts to achieve the MDGs targets for TB by 2015.
The Third Partners' Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in March 2009 resulted in 85 Recommendations for the global community in the fight against TB to create the most inclusive possible environment.
The main objective of TB REACH is to increase case detection of TB, detect the disease as early as possible, and ensure timely and complete treatment while maintaining high TB cure rates. TB REACH focuses on reaching people with limited or no access to TB services and looking for innovative ways to imporve.
Global Plan to Stop TB 2011-2015 was launched in October 2010 and for the first time, identified the research gaps that needed to be filled to bring rapid TB tests, faster treatment regimens and fully effective vaccines to market.
Since 2015, the Stop TB Partnership is hosted and administered by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Geneva.
The Sustainable Development Goals were adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. Goal N°3 makes a bold committment to ending the TB epidemic by 2030.
The Stop TB Partnership and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) released the Out of Step Report 2015 report, a 24-country survey of policies and practices used to guide the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB).
In Cape Town, the Partnership launched the Global Plan to End TB 2016-2020
In December 2016, the UN General Assembly agreed to hold a High-Level Meeting (HLM) on TB by agreeing to Point 22 in the Resolution of its 71st session.
In 2017, the Stop TB Partnership reached a benchmark of 1,500 active Partners.
In July 2017, the G20 Heads of States in their meeting in Hamburg issued a communique recognizing TB as a health priority.
In 2017, the Stop TB Partnership and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) launched the third edition of the Out of Step Report, highlighting the need for governments and other stakeholders to increase efforts to fight TB.
In March 2018, in a high level event linked to the Stop TB Board meeting in Delhi, the Prime Minister of India addressed all Partners.
In April 2018, Partners, including civil society and communities, formulated 5 Key Asks for the UN HLM on TB.
The UN HLM on TB will bring together Heads of State in New York on 26 September 2018. A critical milestone on this path was recently reached with the completionof the Interactive Civil Society Hearing (the Hearing).

In September 2020, the UN Secretary-General issued the Report: Progress towards the achievement of global tuberculosis targets and implementation of the political declaration of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the fight against tuberculosis.

The Stop TB Initiative was established following a meeting of the First Ad hoc Committee on the Tuberculosis Epidemic, held in London in March 1998. The meeting addressed rising global concern about a dramatic upsurge in the TB pandemic.
In March 2000, the Stop TB Initiative produced the Amsterdam Declaration to Stop TB, which called for action from ministerial delegations of 20 countries with the highest burden of TB. In the same year, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization endorsed the establishment of a Global Partnership to Stop TB, and set two targets to be achieved by 2005: to diagnose 70% of all people with infectious TB, and to cure 85% of those diagnosed.
The Stop TB Partnership, as it is now known, has evolved into a broad global partnership of over 2,000 partners drawn from TB communities, international and technical organizations, government programmes, research and funding agencies, foundations, NGOs, society and community groups, and private sector companies, all committed to eliminating TB as a public health problem by 2030.
